Women's Health

Changes in a woman’s body caused by pregnancy, aging, or illness often result in discomfort, loss of mobility, and lifestyle changes. During pregnancy, hormones and changing body alignment may contribute to back or pelvic pain. Childbirth, aging, menopause, or other health issues can cause incontinence or uncontrolled urine loss. And pelvic floor weakness and dysfunction can occur at any stage of a woman’s life.

The women’s health program at the Institute for Athletic Medicine offers specialized physical therapy and exercise programs to help treat or prevent these problems. Our physical therapists work with you and your physician to develop an exercise and treatment program tailored to your needs.

Our approach

We use a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes therapists and other health care providers. First, we will consult with your doctor to rule out medical conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Then, a physical therapist will examine your body alignment, posture, muscle and joint flexibility, and muscle tightness and strength to determine if any of these are causing problems with your health.

Your therapist will explain how the pelvic floor and connective tissues influence body systems and provide a treatment plan that may include manual therapy, myofascial release, stretching and strengthening exercises, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, and patient education.
